Chemotherapy
Chemotherapy refers to medicines or drugs used to treat cancer. All drugs used to treat cancer work in different ways and at different levels of metabolism in the body. Standard or Traditional chemotherapy uses drugs that are cytotoxic , meaning they can kill tumour cells. Other drugs may inhibit hormone dependent cancers while still others may protect normal tissues during cancer chemotherapy.
There are more than 100 chemotherapy drugs. They target different parts of the cell replicating process. Different drugs are used for different cancers.
Chemo cycle
1 cycle of chemo is the time between 1 round of treatment until the start of the next. A single or combination of drugs is administered and there is a rest period till the next cycle. This allows the cancer cells to be attacked when they are most vulnerable and the normal cells of the body to recover.
How many cycles are administered?
In general a minimum of 2-3 cycles is required to be given in order to measure the responsiveness of the tumour to chemo.
The number of cycles can vary from 4 to 12.
There may be an increase in dosage or addition of Targeted Chemotherapy or Immunotherapy ,depending on the response

Two main classes of product are used for chemotherapy of neoplastic disorders
CYTOTOXIC DRUGS
They are designed to stop cell division in cancer cells. Normal cells with a rapid mitotic rate may also be affected
SEX HORMONES
They are mainly used for the treatment of breast and prostatic cancer. Hormonal treatment is based on the concept that hormone dependent neoplasms will regress when deprived of hormonal stimulation.
Other types of chemotherapy
INTERFERONS
They are naturally occurring proteins with complex effect on immunity and cell function.
ADJUNCTIVE THERAPY
Cytoprotectants help protect normal tissues during cancer chemotherapy
AROMATASE INHIBITORS
Can be used in treatment of advanced post menopausal breast cancer. They prevent the conversion of androgens to oestrogens in non ovarian sites thereby removing stimulus for growth in oestrogen dependent tumours
Surgery in advanced stage does not remove 100% of cancer cells. After surgery ,the remaining cancer cells enter a period of growth. Chemotherapy is necessary to slow down ,prevent or destroy these cells.
Most patients will have minor side effects like nausea, vomiting and weakness after chemotherapy. These side effects can be minimized by customizing the dosage over an extended period of time, calculating precise dosage and maintaining a good nutrition during and after chemotherapy.
Loss of hair during chemotherapy is a sign of chemotherapy working in the body. This hair will return after stopping chemotherapy.
That outcome is extremely unpredictable and will depend on a variety of factors , chief among them are stage of cancer and virulence of cancer cells.
